The right first plane is forgiving — it recovers from pilot error, replaces parts cheaply, and doesn't require calibration before every flight. Most products on the market fail at least one of these.

RC plane spec sheets contain numbers that matter and numbers that don't yet matter for a beginner. These three affect your purchase decision directly.
Measured tip to tip. Target 1.0–1.2m for a first plane. Larger = more stable, more visible in the air, better wind penetration. Smaller = faster, less margin for error. Micro trainers under 700mm are not recommended for outdoor beginners.
KV = RPM per volt of input. Lower KV (800–1400) means more torque, larger props, and smoother power delivery — the profile of a good trainer motor. Trainers typically run 900–1200KV. Higher KV suits faster sport and aerobatic planes where prop size is smaller by design.
Capacity in mAh determines flight time. 2200–3000mAh is standard for a 1m trainer — expect 20–25 minutes per charge in calm conditions. "3S" means 3 cells in series (11.1V nominal). Never discharge below 20% charge or leave fully charged for storage — both degrade cell chemistry permanently.
Do not skip the simulator. RC flight has a disorientation problem video games don't: when the plane is flying toward you, left and right controls are reversed relative to your perspective. Simulators like RealFlight (paid) or Picasim (free) let you build the muscle memory before you're dealing with wind and a real $200 aircraft. Target 5–10 hours before your first outdoor flight.

Takeoff tip: hand-launch into the wind rather than rolling on the ground. Easier to control, and avoids tall grass and debris eating your propeller before you're airborne.
Every RC pilot crashes. The AeroScout's foam airframe is designed to absorb impact and be repaired with tape or foam-safe adhesive. What matters is the inspection sequence before you power back on.
Never apply throttle immediately after a hard impact. A damaged motor, bent prop shaft, or punctured LiPo can cause loss of control on re-launch, motor fires, or structural failure mid-flight. Power everything off first — then inspect.
