LiPo batteries store a large amount of energy in a thin, flexible pouch with no rigid metal casing — which means a puncture, crush, or short-circuit can trigger thermal runaway even in a pack that seems "dead." Garbage trucks compact waste under significant pressure, and landfill handling equipment does the same. A single damaged LiPo cell mixed into general trash has caused documented waste facility fires. This isn't a theoretical risk — waste management companies across the US report a steady rise in fires traced back to lithium batteries mixed into curbside collection, and LiPo packs are among the more volatile chemistries because of their pouch construction. Unlike a rigid cylindrical cell, a LiPo pouch has no metal casing to contain a short — a single puncture from compaction equipment can expose the electrolyte directly to air and trigger a fire within seconds. Recycling facilities have had to add dedicated lithium-battery detection and fire suppression specifically because of incidents like this.
A pack still holding voltage carries stored energy that makes transport and handling riskier. For a healthy pack, run it down through normal use or a charger's discharge function until it reads close to 0V. For a pack that's damaged, puffed, or won't safely discharge through normal means, use a saltwater bath: submerge it fully in a bucket of water with a generous amount of salt dissolved in (about 1 cup per gallon) for 24-48 hours. This safely discharges and neutralizes the cells. Do this outdoors, away from flammable materials, and expect some fizzing — that's normal.
Use a plastic or glass container, never metal, and weigh the pack down if it floats — a battery that stays partially submerged won't discharge evenly. After 48 hours, check with a multimeter that the pack reads at or near 0V before moving on to the taping and drop-off steps. If it still shows meaningful voltage, give it another 24 hours in fresh salt water rather than assuming it's done.
Even a fully discharged pack can still short if its exposed terminals or bare wire ends touch metal or each other during transport. Cover the connector and any bare leads with electrical tape before moving the pack anywhere — a bag, a car, or a drop-off box. This single step prevents the vast majority of transport-related battery incidents and is required by most recycling programs.
Carry discharged, taped packs in a LiPo fireproof bag if you have one — it's not required for a properly discharged pack, but it's cheap insurance.
Call2Recycle is the largest battery recycling network in the US and operates free drop-off bins at thousands of locations, including many Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, and Staples stores — search their site by zip code to find the nearest one. Most city and county household hazardous waste (HHW) programs also accept batteries, often at a dedicated collection event or permanent facility. A growing number of local hobby shops that sell LiPo packs will take old ones back as a courtesy — worth asking when you buy your next battery.
If your area has neither a Call2Recycle bin nor a permanent HHW facility nearby, check your city's website for scheduled hazardous waste collection days — many municipalities run quarterly or seasonal drop-off events that accept batteries alongside paint, electronics, and chemicals. Some mail-back recycling programs also exist for a fee, useful if you're disposing of several packs at once and have no local option. Whichever route you use, confirm the location accepts lithium polymer specifically — a few older programs only take NiMH or alkaline.
