How to Charge an RC LiPo Battery

Balance charger setup, the 1C rate rule, what to do when the charge completes — and four mistakes that shorten pack life or create a fire risk.

Why a Balance Charger Is Mandatory

A multi-cell LiPo pack contains cells in series, each with a maximum safe voltage of 4.2V. Through use, cells drift — one may approach 4.2V while others remain lower. A balance charger monitors each cell via the balance lead and equalises them on every cycle. Without this, an overcharged cell degrades rapidly and can enter thermal runaway.

⚠️ Never use a NiMH charger or wall adapter on a LiPo pack. These cannot monitor cell voltage and will overcharge individual cells — the most common cause of LiPo fires among beginners.

Connecting and Configuring the Charger

Place the pack inside a LiPo fireproof bag. Connect the main discharge plug to the charger output — XT60 to XT60, or XT30 to XT30 — then the balance lead to the matching balance port (a 3S pack connects to the 3S socket). Select LiPo chemistry, confirm the cell count manually even if the charger auto-detects, set current to 1C, start the charge, and remain in the area.

Safe Location

Charge on concrete, tile, or another non-flammable surface. A fireproof bag does not substitute for a safe surface — use both.

The 1C Rule

Charge current in amps equals the pack's capacity in amp-hours. A 2200mAh (2.2Ah) pack: 1C = 2.2A. A 1300mAh pack: 1C = 1.3A. A 5000mAh pack: 1C = 5.0A. Many packs are rated for 2C fast charging, but 1C is the standard that maximises cycle life. A 3S 2200mAh pack at 1C from storage voltage reaches full charge in roughly 50–60 minutes. Charging slower than 1C is never harmful.

Reading Completion and Disconnecting

A balanced full charge finishes with all cells at 4.19–4.20V. The charger will beep and display FULL or DONE. Disconnect the balance lead first, then the main plug. Do not leave a fully charged pack on the charger — cells held at 4.2V degrade faster than cells stored at 3.75–3.85V per cell. If not flying within a few hours, put the pack into Storage mode immediately.
