How to Fly an RC Plane

Pre-flight checks, understanding your four controls, takeoff, basic flight, landing — and the mistakes that cause most beginner crashes.

Before Your First Flight

Most beginner crashes happen in the first session before any instinct develops. Understanding Your Four Inputs

RC aircraft use four primary control axes. Most beginners fly Mode 2, where throttle and rudder occupy the left stick and elevator and aileron occupy the right stick.

Launching the Aircraft

Position the nose into the wind — takeoff into the wind reduces ground speed at liftoff and makes the aircraft easier to control. For a hand launch: hold the aircraft level at shoulder height, apply one-third throttle, and release with a gentle forward push. Do not throw upward. The aircraft will fly itself off your hand.

For a ground roll: apply throttle gradually and let the aircraft lift off naturally — do not pull the elevator until it is airborne.

Climb straight ahead for the first 100 metres. Attempting a banked turn at low altitude before you have feel for the aircraft is the single most common cause of first-flight crashes. Altitude is your margin for error.

Flying Circuits and Staying Oriented

At altitude, practice rectangular circuits — straight legs with 90-degree turns. Use aileron to bank into the turn with a small amount of up elevator to hold altitude. Release the bank when the nose points down the next leg.

Orientation loss is the leading cause of beginner crashes. When the aircraft flies toward you, controls reverse relative to your view. If disoriented: reduce throttle, release the sticks. Most SAFE trainers return to level on their own. Regain a visual reference before inputting again. Keep the aircraft close enough to clearly read its attitude.

Setting Up and Executing the Approach

Landing is the hardest skill in RC flying and the phase where most damage occurs. Set up the approach from at least 150 metres out, into the wind, at a stable altitude. Reduce throttle gradually — do not cut power abruptly — and align the aircraft with your intended landing area while there is still time to correct.

On final, reduce throttle and let the aircraft descend gently. Just before touchdown, apply slight back elevator to flare — this slows the aircraft for a smooth arrival. If the approach looks wrong at any point, add throttle and go around. A missed approach costs nothing.
